Herbie Hancock (Chicago, 12 de abril de 1940) é um pianista norte-americano, teclista, líder de banda, compositor e ator, considerado um dos mestres do jazz.

Tocou ao lado de grandes músicos, com destaque para sua colaboração com Miles Davis nos anos 60, num quinteto que se tornou antológico na história do jazz. Ali, Hancock foi introduzido ao piano elétrico Fender Rhodes, ao qual se adaptou imediatamente e logo experimentou a improvisada adaptação de um pedal de wah-wah e uma câmara de eco (um Echoplex). Harold Rhodes, pai do piano elétrico, ao noticiar essas estranhas e até então originais conexões, providencia para que esses conectores constem em todos os novos modelos deste piano.
Uma década adiante, emergindo do universo de Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock monta um grupo com maiores aproximações à tradição popular afro-americana, de uma sonoridade bem mais acessível ao grande público e de grande sucesso. No álbum de título homónimo deste grupo, Head Hunters (1973), Hancock alterna bem sucedidas experimentações pelo eletrofunk com pitadas daquele espírito do quinteto de Miles.

A sua discografia inclui discos voltados para o jazz, assim como algumas incursões pelo fusion, funk e música clássica. Poucos pianistas têm ou tiveram uma carreira tão fecunda quanto Hancock, que já atravessa algumas décadas como um dos maiores pianistas da história do jazz. Gravou, em 1978, com Chick Corea um dos mais belos e surreais trabalhos de dupla ao piano: An Evening with Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea: In Concert.

All tracks were produced, arranged, composed, and performed by Prince. Prince started recording in September 1977 at Sound 80 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he had previously made a demo. Friend and producer David Rivkin (later known as David Z) provided advice and engineering assistance.

For You reached No. 163 on the Billboard 200 and No. 21 on the Billboard Soul chart. "Soft and Wet", the album's lead single, became a minor hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 92. However, it became a Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart, peaking at No. 12. In 2016, after Prince's death, the album re-charted on the Billboard 200, reaching No. 138.

Street Songs, o fantástico álbum de Rick James, foi lançado há 43 anos

 

Street Songs is the fifth studio album by American musician Rick James, released in April 1981 on Gordy Records. "Give It to Me Baby", the lead single from the album, became James' second number one single on the R&B chart, spending five weeks at the top spot. The fifth song on the album, "Super Freak", was also one of James' biggest hits. A Deluxe Edition was released in 2001 containing an additional 17 mixes and live versions of the album tracks. Although the song "Fire and Desire" (a duet he performed with singer Teena Marie) was not originally released as a single, the song itself received much airplay on R&B radio stations and has since become a classic hit (James and Marie would reunite to perform the song at the 2004 BET Awards 5 weeks before James' death).

He is best remembered for his Norman Whitfield-produced Motown singles of the 1970s, most notably the number-one hit "War".

Born in Nashville and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, he later lived in Detroit while singing for Ric-Tic and Motown Records. He was backed by the band that became known as "Black Merda". Hawkins and Veasey of the group played on most of his early hits on the Ric Tic Label. Starr's songs "Twenty-Five Miles" and "Stop the War Now" were also major successes, in 1969 and 1971 respectively. In the 1970s Starr moved to England, where he continued to produce music and resided until his death.

Ele ameaçou cometer suicídio diversas vezes, depois de numerosas e amargas lutas com o seu pai, o pastor evangélico Marvin Pentz Gay (Senior). Em 1 de abril de 1984, um dia antes do seu 45º aniversário, Marvin foi assassinado, com um tiro, pelo próprio pai, após uma disputa iniciada quando os pais de Gaye discutiam sobre a perda de documentos de negócios. A ironia é que Gaye foi morto por uma arma de calibre 12 que ele próprio havia dado ao pai. O seu corpo foi cremado e as cinzas lançadas no Oceano Pacífico. Marvin Pentz Sr. foi condenado a seis anos de prisão, após ser declarado culpado por homicídio. A acusação de assassinato foi abandonada após médicos descobrirem que estava com um tumor cerebral. Marvin Pentz Sr passou os últimos dias da sua vida num asilo, onde morreria de pneumonia em 1998.

Herb Alpert faz hoje 89 anos

    

Herb Alpert (Los Angeles, March 31, 1935) is an American trumpeter who led the band Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass in the 1960s. During the same decade, he co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss. Alpert has recorded 28 albums that have landed on the Billboard 200 chart, five of which became No. 1 albums; he has had 14 platinum albums and 15 gold albums. Alpert is the only musician to hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as both a vocalist ("This Guy's in Love with You", 1968) and an instrumentalist ("Rise", 1979).

Alpert has reportedly sold 72 million records worldwide. He has received many accolades, including a Tony Award and eight Grammy Awards, as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2006, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Alpert was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama in 2013.

Sign o' the Times (often stylized as Sign "☮︎" the Times) is the ninth studio album by American singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Prince. It was first released on March 30, 1987 as a double album by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. The album is the follow-up to Parade and is Prince's first solo album following his disbanding of the Revolution. The album's songs were largely recorded during 1986 to 1987 in sessions for releases Prince ultimately aborted: Dream Factory, the pseudonymous Camille, and finally the triple album Crystal Ball. Prince eventually compromised with label executives and shortened the length of the release to a double album.

Many of the drum sounds on Sign o' the Times came from the Linn LM-1 drum machine, and Prince used the Fairlight CMI synthesizer to replace other instruments. Minimal instrumentation is heard on the stripped-down "Sign o’ the Times", the lead single. Four songs contain higher-pitched vocals to represent Prince's alter ego "Camille". The album's music touches on a varied range of styles, including funk, soul, psychedelic pop, electro, and rock.

Sign o' the Times' release was supported by several singles, among them the socially conscious "Sign o' the Times" and "If I Was Your Girlfriend"; in addition to a well-received concert film of the same name. The album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) four months after its release. It also reached the top 10 in Austria, France, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and the UK and number one in Switzerland. "Sign o' the Times", "U Got the Look" and "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" were all top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Following Prince's death in 2016, the album re-entered the Billboard 200 at number 20.

Though not as commercially successful as Purple Rain, Sign o' the Times was Prince's most acclaimed album, being voted 1987's best album in the Pazz & Jop critics poll. Included in many lists of the greatest albums of all time, it has been appraised by many critics as Prince's best album, ahead of Purple Rain. Writing for The Rolling Stone Album Guide (2004), Michaelangelo Matos regarded it as "the most complete example of [Prince's] artistry's breadth, and arguably the finest album of the 1980s". In 2017, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Bill Withers morreu há quatro anos...

    

William Harrison Withers, Jr. (Slab Fork, 4 de julho de 1938 - Los Angeles, 30 de março de 2020) conhecido pelo seu nome artístico de Bill Withers, foi um cantor e compositor norte-americano de blues e soul que atuou e gravou de 1970 a 1985. Gravou vários sucessos importantes, incluindo "Lean on Me", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Use Me", "Just the Two of Us", "Lovely Day" e "Grandma's Hands". Withers ganhou três Grammy Awards e foi indicado para mais quatro. A sua vida foi o tema do documentário Still Bill, de 2009. Ele foi introduzido no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame em 2015.

  

Vida

Withers era o mais novo de seis irmãos nascidos na pequena cidade de mineração de carvão de Slab Fork, Virgínia Ocidental. Withers tinha treze anos de idade quando o seu pai morreu. Gago, foi criado pela sua avó em grande parte da infância. Ele alistou-se na Marinha dos Estados Unidos aos dezoito anos, onde esteve durante nove anos, período em que demonstrou interesse em cantar e escrever músicas. Dispensado da Marinha em 1965, mudou-se para Los Angeles em 1967 para tentar uma carreira musical. Só alcançou o objetivo quatro anos depois, quando lançou o seu primeiro disco, Just as I Am, que inclui hits como "Grandma's Hands" e "Ain't No Sunshine". Lançou mais seis álbuns em sete anos e afastou-se dos palcos, continuando a atuar como compositor.

As suas canções foram interpretadas por artistas como Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Sting e Mick Jagger e apareceram no cinema e na TV, sendo banda de filmes como Beleza americana, O guarda-costas e Jerry Maguire, entre outros. Em 2015, foi incluído no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Withers morreu no dia 30 de março de 2020 devido a problemas cardíacos, aos 81 anos. Sobreviveram-lhe a sua mulher, Marcia, e dois filhos, Todd e Kori.

Chaka Khan comemora hoje setenta e um anos

  

Chaka Khan (Chicago, 23 de março de 1953) é o pseudónimo da cantora norte-americana Yvette Marie Stevens.

Khan chamou atenção do mundo da música pela primeira vez como cantora, na banda funk Rufus, em meados dos anos 70. Com a ajuda de Stevie Wonder, despontou nas tops de sucesso pop e R&B em 1974, com a canção "Tell Me Something Good".

Em 1978 teve grande sucesso interpretando "I'm Every Woman", canção disco composta pela dupla Ashford & Simpson. Outras músicas de sucesso suas incluem "Do you love what you feel" (1979) e "I Feel for you" (1984).

A carreira de Chaka Khan tem sido irregular em termos de vendas de discos, porém tem continuado a gravar e sua marca como ícone da música negra norte-americana, especialmente do soul, é indiscutível. A sua versatilidade permitiu-lhe ainda fazer música de disco', hip hop, jazz, R&B e funk.

Tim Maia, nome artístico de Sebastião Rodrigues Maia (Rio de Janeiro, 28 de setembro de 1942 - Niterói, 15 de março de 1998), foi um cantor, compositor, maestro, produtor musical, instrumentista e empresário brasileiro, responsável pela introdução do estilo soul na música popular brasileira e reconhecido mundialmente como um dos maiores ícones da música no Brasil. As suas músicas eram marcadas pela rouquidão da sua voz, sempre grave e carregada, conquistando o público e consagrando muitos sucessos.

Em 8 março de 1998, enquanto gravava um show para a televisão no Teatro Municipal de Niterói, Tim Maia se sentiu mal e foi internado com crise hipertensiva e edema pulmonar. Um quadro grave de infeção desenvolveu-se nos dias seguintes e acabou morrendo, com 55 anos, em 15 de março daquele ano, causando grande comoção no Rio de Janeiro e em todo o Brasil.

Contrary to some reports, she is not related to Bootsy and Catfish Collins.
